PhD Student in Structural Biology of Host-Pathogen Interactions

Delft University of Technology, Delft, Netherlands
Application deadline: 29 Feb 2020

TU Delft are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Biomolecular Electron Nanoscopy group of Dr. Arjen Jakobi at the Department of Bionanoscience, Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft. The laboratory studies molecular mechanisms of the host machinery mediating defense against invading pathogens using a structural biology approach that integrates cryo-EM imaging with methods from biophysics, protein biochemistry and cell biology. We also develop and apply new approaches for cryo-EM imaging to facilitate meeting our research goals.

You will express and purify key protein complexes mediating intracellular immunity and determine their structure using state-of-the-art structural biology techniques. This project will also provide the student with a unique opportunity to conduct high-resolution electron cryo-tomography in order to structurally characterise these complexes in their native cellular context. Training will be provided in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, cryo-EM and associated image-processing techniques as well as X-ray crystallography. Depending on the experience and interest of the applicant, there will be flexibility to focus the project towards cellular or molecular structural biology. Possible projects and further details will be discussed during the interviews. A contract for 4 years will be offered to the successful candidate.

The University offers a dynamic, supportive and collegial environment with access to state-of-the art facilities. The Department of Bionanoscience will provide outstanding infrastructure for nanofabrication, fluorescence microscopy molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, state-of-the-art electron microscopy and high-performance computing for image processing.

REQUIREMENTS

The candidate should have a degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics or a related field, with research experience in molecular biology and enthusiasm for working at the interface of biology, chemistry, and physics. Expertise in recombinant protein expression is strongly desired. Previous experience with electron microscopy or X-ray crystallography is beneficial, but not required. We are looking for a candidate with a high level of intellectual creativity and genuine interest in fundamental research, who has the motivation and ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team. Good communication skills in English are essential.
