Your role
Reporting to an Associate Director, we are seeking an ambitious individual to lead the development of the BioImage Archive at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).
The revolution in imaging technologies has led to the need to share, integrate and reuse image data in a comprehensive way. The BioImage Archive, launched in 2019, was made possible from funds from UKRI provides the means to store and search life science datasets from all imaging technologies at all scales and across all modalities.
Hosted at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), the home of biological data in Europe, the BioImage Archive expands our open data mission to include biological images. An ambitious Team Leader is sought to lead the development of the BioImage Archive into a mature and widely used resource.
Recently celebrating its 1st anniversary, it is our ambition for the BioImage Archive to make the deposition of image data linked to publications as routine as the deposition of nucleotide sequence data into the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) or of 3D molecular structure data into PDB and raw EM data into EMPIAR.
As an EMBL Faculty member, Community Engagement will be an important part of your work, engaging with EMBL’s wider imaging development, Euro-BioImaging colleagues and imaging community experts to ensure that the archive serves the needs of researchers, data scientists, funders and the wider public.
It will be necessary to develop technical and biological metadata requirements for successful image data submission, as well as to explore and deliver methods to store, link and disseminate image data to enable wide reuse.
The opportunity to integrate image data with ‘omics, structural and other data from a wide variety of studies, ranging from, for example, environmental sampling to single-cell analysis of development will mean collaboration with colleagues across EMBL-EBI.
Finally, the role will encompass encouraging data submissions and attracting additional funding; therefore we expect the candidate to be able to make a compelling case for using the BioImage Archive to researchers, imaging facilities, journal editors, as well as funders to support its development. This post is an EMBL faculty role, in which the first priority is to fully establish the BioImage Archive.
